This is a specially selected form of so-called titanota A. titanota . The long, narrow leaves are edged with white, wavy spines that flicker like flames, giving the plant a fiery appearance. Another feature is the fine, abundant spines stretching all the way to the base of the leaves. Although this plant was thought to have originated in Taiwan, it actually traces its roots to China. However, there are rumors that even among plants called 'Kaiou,' their origins can differ.

Lately, I've been feeling like the 'Kaiou' I see at stores is different from the 'Kaiou' I have at home. If they're not the same, it seems that the ones seen at events or at Yamashiro Aisen-en—those with a slender, sharper appearance when young—are the genuine 'Kaiou,' while the one I have at home might be the rumored type from a different origin.
