With its surface softly covered in fine hairs, giving it a matte, velvety feel and appearance, this tower-shaped Crassula really stands out. This is the signature charm of "Columella," a feature that sets it apart from similar forms—like the glossy C. marchandii , the hairless and crisp C. pyramidalis , and the powdery, rugged C. deceptor —as the only one with this unique trait.
Despite its striking looks, this plant is surprisingly tough in its native habitat, growing from cracks in quartzite rocks and bravely protruding into the blazing sun. While its basic color is a bright green that often reddens toward the leaf tips (as noted in the original description), most of the specimens shown in the GBIF local gallery are an intense red. Just how much "stress" does it take to reach such vivid coloration? It’s a fun challenge to try (for Columella, of course).
Columella’s homeland is a very small area between Grootmis and Lekkersing, in the Richtersveld region of the Northern Cape, South Africa. Since this region has rainy winters, it’s a winter-growing succulent. In summer, make sure to keep it especially dry and airy.
