A member of the "lizard" Crassula group, this species stacks chunky, white-matte, round leaves vertically to form a compact column. It natively camouflages itself among the scattered white quartz rocks of the succulent Karoo, stretching from Namaqualand in South Africa to southwestern Namibia—a rocky desert also home to Lithops and Adromischus. The scientific name "deceptor" means "trickster" or "impostor," directly referencing its stone-mimicking disguise. While it looks similar to C. cornuta , that one has pointed leaves, whereas deceptor has shorter, round leaves, making the distinction easy—though, in reality, many types land somewhere between the two, and those extremes each ended up with their own scientific names. Names like "Shiro-Chigo," "Chigo-Sugata," or "Yume-Chigo" found in the trade might actually refer to forms that look a bit different, but that's still uncertain. What used to be called "Tama-Chigo" (the "arta" form) is now considered the same plant. As for C. marchandii , even though its texture is quite different, its shape was reminiscent enough that people compared it, but its parent, C. plegmatoides , is widely recognized in the hobby as looking nearly identical to deceptor (though they're not really close relatives).
