This variegated form of the globe-shaped cactus "Sekainozu" (Echinopsis eyriesii f.variegata) pops up with fluffy, cotton-like areoles here and there along its pronounced ribs, making it easy to see why its name suggests "world map"—it really does resemble a tiny globe! This species has been popular in Japan for a long time and is commonly seen on neighborhood porches and entryways. Despite the name "short hair" and the soft appearance of those cottony areoles, don’t be fooled—the spines themselves are quite sharp and can definitely give you a prickly poke.
