A powerfully built barrel cactus with a somewhat flattened ball shape and thick, robust spines. Known ominously as the "horse crippler" for supposedly injuring horses to the point they can’t walk, it’s also called the "candy cactus" thanks to its sweet, edible fruits—so sweet, in fact, they were once used to make candy (who would have thought such a cute turn!). It grows to about 30 cm in diameter and 20 cm tall. Although it was originally the only member of its unique genus, Homalocephala, it is now classified as a member of the genus E. texensis .
