An agave with a striking, mysterious look, its broad blue-gray leaves lined with deeply carved, reddish, fierce-looking, but relatively small spines along the entire edge. This is a medium-sized species that grows outward, reaching a maximum diameter of 35–75 cm and a height of 25–50 cm. A distinctive feature is the multitude of almost continuous spines decorating the leaf margins—far more wavy and numerous than those of A. potatorum , though not as large as those on A. horrida , but still broad and bold. The spines are more robust and showy than those of A. seemanniana ssp.pygmaea . This is definitely a variety to watch, with strong potential to become popular. Its natural home is in the city of Guadalajara, Mexico's second largest city. This region sits at a high elevation, but winters are mild (at least 10°C even in the coldest months), and the summers are marked by heavy downpours—these conditions give hints about how to care for this plant. There's also a cultivar with gorgeous white leaves and red spines called A. guadalajarana 'Leon' . (Note: continuous spines aren't an absolute trait for Agave guadalajarana, and there’s individual variation.)
