With its charming pink-edged, petite leaves, this plant might seem dainty at first glance, but it's actually related to the spiny "Didiereaceae" family—and can grow into a huge tree! While those available in Japan typically only reach about 1-2 meters tall, that's still quite a surprise for many growers. Its towering size is also reflected in its nickname "Elephant Bush," since elephants feed on it. Outside Japan, it's not just used as a garden shrub but is also popular for BONSAI WOOD. The variegated type is often called "Gaku-no-mai Nishiki" (雅楽の舞錦), but the original, non-variegated form has its own name: "Ginchouju P. afra ," while just "Gaku no Mai" (雅楽の舞) refers specifically to the variegated variety.

Im worried about my portulacaria afra variegata i think she didn't enjoy being repotted
Finally found a good use for this wee pot! I bought it in Sarawak during a school trip I think… now it's a home for my Portulacaria afra variegata. #trivia This succulent is edible! It's also called Elephant Bush or porkbush, or spekboom in Afrikaans. https://t.co/qTJ6tJEnCF
