PUKUBOOK Succulent picture book

CRASSULACEAE Sedum dasyphyllum

Also Known As JA ダシフィルム JA 姫星美人

This Sedum is a ground cover type that produces clusters of tiny, round leaves just a few millimeters across. The leaves are quite delicate and will easily fall off when touched, and the stems look thin and fragile like threads—but don’t let that fool you. True to the hardy spirit of succulents, it quickly puts out lots of new shoots from dropped leaves, and any stems you cut and stick into soil will start growing on their own. It originally comes from Europe. Even though it’s simply called dasyphyllum, there’s actually a huge range of leaf shapes and sizes, and some varieties have fine fuzzy hairs while others don’t. The super-popular cultivar "Purple Haze" S. dasyphyllum 'Purple Haze' is one of these variants.

FEATURES/ORIGINFeatures/Origin

This is a super cute groundcover-type Sedum, producing plump, round leaves around a slender central stem—though each leaf only measures a few millimeters across. It’s native to a wide range across Europe. The basic leaf color is a dark, bluish green, but in colder weather and bright sunlight the leaves can turn gorgeous shades of purple.

Even though we tend to call them all “dasyphyllum,” that’s about where the similarities stop—there’s a lot of diversity: some types have just four leaves per whorl, others have many; some have fuzzy leaves, while others are smooth. There’s a lot of variation.

The Japanese name "Himehoshibijin" (meaning "tiny star beauty") may have originally referred to just one dasyphyllum variety, but nowadays it feels more like a common name for the whole group—including all their different variants and subspecies.

POINTCare Points

VARIATIONVariation

Wild Types and Varieties

Exactly how many scientifically recognized varieties there are depends on which reference you use, but it’s generally 2 or 3.

S. dasyphyllum var.dasyphyllum

The standard Sedum dasyphyllum. Its main trait is that when viewed from above, you typically see only four leaves arranged in a cross (“decussate”), and from the side, the leaves grow out as pairs from the same height, known as “opposite leaves.”

S. dasyphyllum var.glanduliferum

The variety glanduliferum. Unlike the standard, this one has single leaves coming out at different heights—what’s called “alternate leaves”—as seen from the side. Other than that, it’s almost impossible to distinguish it from regular dasyphyllum, since both show huge variation depending on the plant or where it’s from (and sometimes you’ll even find individuals where the whole alternate/opposite pattern is swapped, which makes things even more chaotic…).

Reference photo If you look closely, you can see there’s only one leaf emerging at each height (alternate arrangement).

S. dasyphyllum var.suendermanii (Fuzzy?)
Sedum dasyphyllum var.granatense (Many leaves?)
Sedum dasyphyllum var.alternum (Alternate?)

Many of these other named variants, which were originally classified based on unique features, are now considered the same as glanduliferum. That’s how much diversity glanduliferum can show. Both Purple Haze and Reference are thought to belong to this group as well.

S. dasyphyllum var.oblongifolium

The variety oblongifolium. It doesn’t have any especially well-defined features, but seems to make lots of large leaves, forming a sort of rosette. The garden variety ‘Major’ is similar in appearance.

Cultivars

Purple Haze S. dasyphyllum 'Purple Haze'

A superstar garden variety, this one colors up in vibrant reds and purples in the cool season. It’s even more famous than dasyphyllum itself (haha). The leaves are arranged alternately, so it’s thought to be a type of glanduliferum.

Purple Haze
Dasyphyllum Reference S. dasyphyllum 'Reference'

Some say that of all the plants sold as "dasyphyllum," this might be the main one. It looks almost identical to Purple Haze, though if you look closely, its leaves might be a bit bigger. Maybe the stems stretch more? Or the leaves look more like a rosette from above instead of a cross? Hmm… it’s hard to say for sure—maybe it’s just an environmental difference.

Dasyphyllum Reference
Major S. dasyphyllum 'Major'

As the name suggests, this is a larger type. Instead of forming crosses, the leaves spread out and pile up densely in a rosette—so it almost looks like a miniature ‘Beer Hop’ S. burrito .

Major
Lylac Mound S. dasyphyllum 'Lylac Mound'

A rare garden cultivar. The leaves are arranged opposite each other, so it’s thought to come from the standard dasyphyllum line.

Blue Cadet S. dasyphyllum 'Blue Cadet'

A garden cultivar known only by name—no detailed information available.

Minor Sedum dasyphyllum 'Minor'

Another variety that exists only in name. As the name hints, it’s probably a small one, but no detailed info so far.
