A tough and compact miniature Tillandsia that clings to nearly vertical cliff faces in alpine zones at altitudes of 2,300 to 3,000 meters. Its leaves are very short, stiff, and densely packed, shimmering with a silver hue to form a small rosette less than 3 cm in diameter. Growth is quite slow. ...Now, technically, the scientific name heteromorpha var. heteromorpha should refer to the same plant as the basic species T. heteromorpha , but their characteristics and habitats differ. Plus, while the base species was described in 1906, this variety was named in 2005—a full hundred years later—with little detailed information available, making its identification questionable. There's even academic discussion that it might actually be a different species.
