With silvery leaves dusted in powdery frost and soft pink bouquets peeking through, Tillandsia oaxacana truly lives up to its name! Native to the state of Oaxaca, Mexico, it grows at a relaxed pace in oak and pine forests, often basking in the misty air. Its dense layer of trichomes, which help it soak up morning dew, give this air plant its signature velvety feel. First described by L.B. Smith in 1949, it’s a relatively new species and still quite rare in cultivation. Oaxacana thrives with simple care: bright, indirect light and a good soak once a week—just allow it to fully dry afterwards. While it may look a lot like the well-known T. stricta , oaxacana stands out with its longer, narrower leaves forming a soft, open rosette. In contrast, stricta hugs its leaves close together and prefers the higher humidity of lowland areas—making these two a charmingly contrasting pair.
