Spreading across the sparkling granite cliffs, this T. neglecta grows in dense, fluffy clusters with its hard, short, tightly curled leaves. When you touch them, they feel thick, rubbery, and slightly sticky—quite unique. The leaves are normally light green, but with plenty of sunlight, they turn bronze or reddish purple. Its slender violet-blue petals emerge gracefully from salmon-pink to red flower spikes.
T. neglecta's homeland is the cliffs of Cabo Frio, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Unlike the so-called "silver-leaf" air plants, it's a green-leaf type that likes a bit more water and humidity. If you're mounting it onto cork, it appreciates a wrap of sphagnum moss to keep it happy (since it naturally creeps sideways over rock faces, mounting it "sideways" will give it that wild, authentic look).
The species name "neglecta" means "overlooked"—rumor has it that, despite its beauty, it was long ignored. And fittingly, after its first scientific description, it was nearly erased as a species and lumped in as just a variety of T. tenuifolia , until another researcher later argued, "No, this is a distinct species!" Its appearance most closely matches T. aeranthos among its relatives.
By the way, in the plant trade, you're likely to see different forms, like the large red 'Red Giant', the bright, big 'Giant', or even small-form varieties making the rounds.
