These beauties were all 4"-6" plants when I first planted them. Now it's getting tricky (read: dangerous) to remove the leaf litter building up in between. Agave desmettiana 'Variegata', variegated smooth agave. This one has been fast growing, with good offsetting. One of Lori's favorite. If you're a Mormon, you may be interested to know, the Phoenix temple uses this agave extensively in the landscaping and as an architectural design element. Agave fact: some agave species, like this one, have an interesting bloom feature, bulbils. When it blooms, the stalk produces flowers normally, but the flowers turn into miniature plants while on the stalk, called bulbils. Each bulbil is already a fully formed plant, ready to start rooting and grow on its own. So someday when this agave blooms, I'll have hundreds if not thousands of agaves to share. It's really amazing to see. Also, if you see one in bloom and you want one of your own, ask the owner for a bulbil. . . . .
