After taking note of this species I recognized it outside the apartment complex at which we were staying. Euphorbia antisyphilitica (Candelilla). Candelilla has been in demand in Mexico and other countries owing to its high quality wax. Mexico is the world’s only producer of candelilla wax, and 80 % of the country’s total output is extracted from the Chihuahuan desert. Exploitation of candelilla began in colonial times when the wax was used to manufacture candles, leather protection products, and matches. But largescale exploitation began in the early twentieth century when the first factory was built in Mexico. During the first and second world wars, interest in candelilla wax increased as it could be used to waterproof tents and manufacture ammunition.
