Umeda is the gateway to Osaka and a metropolis that never stops evolving. Centered around JR Osaka Station, this area has captivated people as a "city that shows a new face every time you visit"—from the station's renewal in 2011 and the opening of Grand Front Osaka in 2013, to the birth of LINKS UMEDA in 2019 and the partial pre-opening of "GRAND GREEN OSAKA" in March 2025.
In the midst of this remarkable redevelopment in Umeda, a new landmark has emerged that no plant lover can afford to miss. That is "GARDENS umekita," which I’ll be introducing today.
Please note that the people in the photos have been replaced with "illustrations" by AI for privacy protection. I apologize for any slight sense of visual oddity...
I say "latest," but I must apologize—"GARDENS umekita" actually opened in September 2024. I’ve finally taken the time to give it the full feature it deserves!
Located on the 1st floor of the North Building in the GRAND GREEN OSAKA Shop & Restaurant area, "GARDENS umekita" is an urban-concept store specializing in plants and aquariums, with the philosophy of "bringing water and greenery closer to life."
It might sound cliché, but the interior is truly "an oasis in the heart of the city." It features everything from popular houseplants to rare caudex plants, tropical fish from around the world, and large-scale aquascaped tanks that you wouldn't typically find in the Umeda area. It’s more than just a retail space; the expert staff provides advice on planting and aquariums, and they host regular workshops and events. For anyone looking to integrate greenery or aquascaping into their lifestyle, it’s truly an ideal shop.
To be honest, I’ve visited many times since the opening, but the reason I decided to write about it now is that it has a charm that makes you want to keep coming back. Let me share all the reasons why this place is so magnetic.
As soon as you step inside, the first things that catch your eye are the beautifully arranged plants and aquariums.
The rock-garden-style display right near the entrance is breathtaking. Produced by Kunzo Nishihata, who has deep roots in the Kansai region, it features bold arrangements of massive Platycerium (Staghorn ferns), exotic plants, and Euphorbia. Of course, most of these aren't just for show—they are products available for purchase. While they carry a significant price tag, considering their venerable, aged appearance, they might actually be quite reasonable (though I still can't quite afford them!).
The selection caters to a wide range of needs, from various Cacti and Caudex to large foliage plants that can completely transform the atmosphere of a room. While these types of plants are often associated with a rugged, "masculine" aesthetic, I’ve noticed many more female customers lately.
The aquariums with beautiful tropical fish and the lush terrariums are true works of art. Just looking at them is healing for the soul. While I’m not an expert in the aquarium genre, I’ve heard that their selection of related goods is top-tier.
By the way, from a succulent lover's perspective, I have to mention that the selection of so-called "succulents" like Echeveria and Sedum is quite small. They aren't non-existent, but there are only about one or two wagons' worth... that’s a slightly sad point for me.
Some of you might be surprised to hear that the parent company is "Kohnan" (a major Japanese home center chain). However, "GARDENS umekita" is a world away from the traditional home center image, offering a sophisticated, urban atmosphere.
Aside from the "Kohnan" logo subtly tucked into the store name, you’ll find almost no trace of the usual hardware store vibe. Items like flower pots and decorative stones are carefully curated for their simple, high-quality designs, making it easy to find something that fits seamlessly into any interior. I especially loved the service where they sell various decorative stones by weight—it's a fantastic feature for those who are particular about their potting finishes.
You can really feel the enthusiasm—it’s as if Kohnan put their heart and soul into creating a true specialty plant shop. It’s the ultimate urban lifestyle store.
Located on the north side of GRAND GREEN OSAKA, you might end up taking a long detour if you choose the wrong path to "GARDENS umekita." So, let me share my recommended shortest route as a frequent visitor. There are no traffic lights, and it's almost a straight line, so please use this as a guide!
1. Cross from JR Osaka Station to Grand Front.
2. Walk through the 2nd floor of Grand Front.
3. Cross over to the North Building.
4. You'll hit a dead end at the North Building atrium; turn left.
5. Cross the GRAND GREEN connecting bridge.
6. Walk through the Canopy building.
Part of the charm of "GARDENS umekita" is that there are several other attractive green-related shops nearby. If you’ve come all the way to Umeda, I highly recommend "shop hopping" to fully enjoy your plant shopping day.
A select shop for greenery and lifestyle goods. The underlying concept seems to be "Sustainability." Centered around recycled pots, they offer simple, urban-style sundries and unique plants. It’s perfect for those looking for stylish, eco-friendly items. It seems to serve as the Kansai hub and first directly managed store for the landscaping network KEEP GREEN, part of "DAISHIZEN Inc.," famous for SOLSO FARM.
While it's a well-known furniture and lifestyle shop, their selection of greenery and pots is incredibly sophisticated, and I always find something new. It’s especially recommended for those looking for tips on how to match plants with their interior decor.
Unlike "GARDENS umekita" or "ACTUS," this shop has an abundance of casual and decorative gardening sundries. It’s perfect for finding unique items to express your personality or for finding a small gift. Be careful, though—when I went, I got lost because the name wasn't on the store map! It’s located on the B1 floor of LINKS UMEDA, next to the "Harves" supermarket and diagonally across from McDonald's.
A classic flower shop with excellent access directly connected to the station. Beautiful seasonal flowers color the storefront, making it easy to stop by and enjoy the blooms of the moment. Great for a quick gift, too.
If you're looking for a "cool, masculine plant space," this is it. It’s in the opposite direction from "GARDENS umekita," but don't worry—it's only a few minutes' walk from the station.
A grassy plaza spreading across the center of GRAND GREEN OSAKA, right in the middle of the city. With well-maintained lawns, garden tables, and a fountain corner where children can play in the water, people of all ages can enjoy their time here. There are plenty of lunch spots nearby, and there's a 7-Eleven close by, so you can easily enjoy a picnic vibe. Having a backdrop of giant skyscrapers is a fresh experience. I've never seen it so crowded that you couldn't find a seat, so I think it's a bit of a hidden gem.
"MIRRORGE OSAKA" is a new-sensation VR/AR entertainment spot that families and adults alike can enjoy. By wearing the latest VR goggles—specifically the Apple Vision Pro, an ultra-high-end headset costing around 600,000 yen, which is a bragging right in itself—you can experience epic virtual entertainment set in Umekita Park. My expectations were initially low, thinking maybe I could "magically make flowers bloom on the bare trees in the park," but the scale far exceeded my imagination. I definitely want you to try it. However, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone with a fear of heights...
The area around Osaka Station, especially "Umeda," is constantly changing and creating new charms.
Starting with "GARDENS umekita," there are many still-undiscovered attractive spots around GRAND GREEN OSAKA. Nothing would make me happier than if this article serves as a catalyst for you to enjoy "the Umeda of today" and make new discoveries.
If you have the chance, please visit Umeda and experience the breath of this evolving city and the rich green life you can find there!
