PUKUBOOK Succulent picture book

2024.3.22 This Winter’s Succulent Watchlist — Hot Picks from Japan and Around the World!

The PUKUBOOK column is, at its core, my personal notepad—full of my own experiences, experiments, and discoveries. In other words, most of the topics come from "what I'm currently up to." Right now, what am I spending the most time on? Collecting new, unknown succulents, photographing them, and building out encyclopedia pages for them. So, I thought I’d pull all that together and share it with you!

This is part "Look at my latest collection additions!" and part "Succulents I'm excited about right now!". It’s a seasonal tradition I started in autumn. Hope you enjoy it.

Variegated & Ultra Rare

Blood Surprise

This one didn’t join my collection just recently—it’s been with me for about a year. Even back then it was pricey, and I even pleaded to buy a single plant instead of the usual lot requirement. Maybe because it’s so expensive for a lesser-known plant, I could hardly find it anywhere, and there was literally no information online—then or now. I didn’t even know what it would look like fully grown, but now I’m finally starting to see it live up to its dramatic name.

Graptopetalum 'Purple Delight Variegated'
Graptoveria 'Ellen Variegated'
Echeveria peacockii Baker f. variegata
Echeveria 'Mini Gossaon Variegated'

Whenever I come across a rare variegated cultivar, I try to snap it up if I can—even though they’re often quite expensive at first, so I do set some limits. I tend to prioritize varieties I know but haven't managed to get yet, rather than going after truly unknown rare finds.

Lola Types

Echeveria 'Seigetsu Nishiki'
Echeveria 'Lola Variegated Gold'
Echeveria derenbergii f.variegata
Echeveria 'Deresina Variegated'
Echeveria peacockii Bluete f. variegata

Earlier this year I predicted, "Lola variegated types will be huge!", but looking around again, there are so many plants that look just like 'Lola Variegated'! So I decided, why not collect them all? The list above isn’t even the full roster—more are on the way, so expect a future feature on “Lola Variegates & Friends!”

Minima

Echeveria minima
Echeveria 'Blue Minima'
Echeveria 'Pink Minima'
Echeveria 'White Minima'
Echeveria minima f.variegata
Echeveria 'Blue Minima Variegated'
Echeveria 'Pink Minima Variegated'
Echeveria 'White Minima Variegated'

Ever notice how there are tons of cultivars out there with “minima” or “mini” in the name, almost like collectable color variations? Honestly, I half wanted to shout "enough already!"—so of course I had to get them all and compare. There are even more out there, so whenever I find a new one, I’ll be sure to add it to my side-by-side photo collection.

Korean Hybrids

Echeveria 'Jade Star Variegated'
Echeveria 'Rupita'
Echeveria 'Pink Butterfly'
Echeveria 'Houmeng'
Echeveria 'Hani'
Echeveria 'Lilac'
Echeveria 'Corsican Rose'
Echeveria 'Arctic Fox'
Echeveria 'Adam'
Echeveria 'Beyonce Variegated Rainbow'
Echeveria 'Strawberry Milkshake'
Echeveria 'Pink Conch'
Echeveria 'Red Light'
Echeveria 'Werther'
Echeveria 'Missing Snow'
Echeveria 'Diamond Colorata'

The Korean succulents I feature here aren’t so much about being “brand new to the world,” but more ones that are beginning to gain a reputation—already becoming popular. And honestly, visuals and catchy names are a big factor for me!

Aeonium

Aeonium 'Ariel'
Aeonium 'Charm Golden Rose'
Aeonium 'WuTianji'
Aeonium 'White Wedding Dress'

I just ran an “Aeonium Special” feature the other day, but I’m steadily building my Aeonium collection for this year as well. I want to introduce each one as clearly and distinctly as possible, highlighting their standout features.

Miscellaneous

Echeveria 'Cherry Whip'
Sedum 'Patrick Star'
Echeveria pulidonis 'Christmas Bump'
Echeveria 'Texensis Rosea'

Sometimes I run into mystery plants that I have no idea about, or I pick up a "latest variety" without realizing it! Those unexpected discoveries are part of the fun.

Echeveria colorata 'Nakasato Lindsayana'

And finally, this one. I can’t get my hands on it yet, so there’s no photo (lol)—but the text is so very PUKUBOOK, I just had to share ★

Wrapping Up

PUKUBOOK is an encyclopedia-style site, so “making lots of encyclopedia pages” might actually be the most PUKUBOOK-typical kind of column. Going forward, I’ll likely be leaning into these collection roundups more often. Of course, I’ll still write about “how to grow them,” too!
