A quick note to start. In Chinese, “Parrot beak 鸚鵡嘴” is actually the common name for “desmetiana”. As some sources explain—like those that state, “there are various variegated types, and they’re hard to distinguish”—this is not the name of a specific variegated cultivar. With that in mind, here’s how things stand in Japan. All “Parrot beak” agaves traded under that name here do have the desmetiana form, but their variegation patterns differ: some have margin-variegation, others have central stripes, and so on. What probably happened is that when various variegated desmetiana types such as A. 'Joe Hoak' , A. 'Quick Silver' , and A. desmetiana 'Galactic Traveller' (= A. 'Blue Moon' ) were imported into Japan, the “Parrot beak 鸚鵡嘴 (=desmetiana)” tag that accompanied them was misunderstood as a specific cultivar name, and that idea spread. But no worries—it’s not just Japan! In the West, too, “Parrot beak” is used for all sorts of variegated types on the market. The photo shows a plant I got as “Parrot beak,” which I’m still watching; so far, it looks a lot like 'Quick Silver' or the cultivar 'Mediopicta Aurea' (meaning golden center variegation).
