With its elegantly curving leaves and striking, crisp white variegation, this agave deserves the title "the Angelina Jolie of the agave world" (just my own opinion).
Its overall shape is similar to A. desmetiana 'Venezuela' , but the white markings are bolder and give it a much more sculptural look. It also resembles A. americana var.margiana , but here, the dramatic, sweeping curves stand out. The leaves themselves are wider and more robust, giving a striking presence for a mid-sized species that can grow to about 60 cm across. The name Joe Hoak reportedly comes from the Florida grower who popularized this cultivar. There are records that it has withstood -2 to -8°C, though it's safest to bring it indoors over winter. Many people call it a "color variant of A. meridensis " or a "variegated form of A. 'Joe Hoak' ," but both ideas seem to be misunderstandings (details below). The leaves are broader and the spines are more pronounced (desmetiana is nearly spineless), so it creates a very different impression compared to desmetiana.

With its elegantly curved leaves and sharp white variegation, this agave truly stands out as the "Angelina Jolie of the agave world" (just my take). Its form resembles the A. desmetiana 'Venezuela' , but the way the white stripes appear is much bolder and highlights its sculptural beauty. The presence of spines on the leaves also sets it apart from desmetiana. The leaves are even wider and more substantial, allowing this medium-sized species to reach about 60cm and still have major impact.
Sometimes you’ll see desmetiana included in its scientific name, but the prevailing view is that it's a hybrid of desmetiana and something else (its precise origins are officially “unknown”). It's also been described as a "variegated type of A. meridensis ", but in fact, there isn’t any such species as meridensis! There's actually a theory that this mix-up might be a case of miradorensis being passed along incorrectly, and personally, I think that’s the more likely explanation. While miradorensis is now lumped together with desmetiana academically, it was once considered a separate species, so we have the smooth, spineless desmetiana and the spiny miradorensis… Well, that’s just how I see it.
By the way, Joe Hoak is named after the horticulturist in Florida who helped introduce this variety.
There’s no solid record that this plant is truly cold-tolerant. While it’s said to have survived even -2 to -8°C, it’s much safer to keep it indoors in the winter.
It grows quickly, produces lots of offsets, and is relatively easy to care for. In summer, give it plenty of water. In winter, water only after the soil has dried out completely, but enough so the leaves don’t wrinkle.
