Astrophytum is loved for its simple, attractive look: chubby, sturdy ribs topped with evenly spaced, fuzzy, spineless areoles, and a body scattered with tiny white stars. The round, ball-shaped form is especially popular and commonly seen, but as the plant matures, it actually grows taller and elongates. This species almost never forms offsets and does not self-pollinate, so there’s a lot of active hybridization—meaning individual plants can look completely different from one another! Some have variegation, some are covered in stars, some have none at all. The Japanese name for it, “Kinchaku Saboten” ((now pretty much obsolete)), was rediscovered thanks to the NHK drama 'Ranman.' According to rumor, this name came from the journal of Tanaka Yoshio, who brought the plant back from overseas during the Edo period.
