This is a peculiar species that seems to capture the very moment evolution is sparked by mutation. It's a type of Astrophytum native to Nuevo León, Mexico, but its familiar star-shaped form has vanished—replaced instead by countless thin stems that make it look more like an agave than a cactus. Among cacti with a similar appearance, Leuchtenbergia principis L. principis is well known. However, Astrophytum caput-medusae, in contrast, may not have fully established itself in the wild and is now teetering on the brink of extinction. It has very little ability to store water, a hallmark of most cacti, which makes it extremely sensitive to dry conditions. While it's often grafted, it can also be grown on its own roots. This cactus is a summer grower that goes dormant as summer ends.
