The white snake succulent, Avonia papyracea A. papyracea , which you might occasionally spot at local garden stores, is a caudiciform type with a chunky, swollen base. That said, an individual "snake" stem is only a few millimeters thick and about 3cm long, with the whole plant usually fitting within a 5cm space—it's a true mini-mini size. It was labeled as "White-flowered alstonii" at the shop. Originally, alstonii is a subspecies that naturally produces white flowers, while the purple-flowered original, Avonia quinaria A. quinaria , is called "Red-flowered alstonii" to help tell them apart. Compared to quinaria, the flowers of this one are larger and more noticeable. You can harvest seeds and grow new plants even from just one individual, but when young, they don't have a caudex—instead, they look more like regular trees with slender branches. It takes about 7 to 8 years for the caudex to develop enough to be exposed and for the plant to grow vigorously. This species originates in South Africa's Namaqualand. Even though its name includes "nishiki" (which often means variegation), it isn't variegated. What makes it look whitish are the well-developed parts at the base of the leaves called stipules, which cover and protect the leaves.
