A groundcover-type Crassula that trails out countless tiny, red, and fuzzy leaves—so small they look like grains of rice. At first, I wondered how much ground it could actually cover given its size, but then I spotted a giant dishful and felt reassured (Let’s just not ask how many years that took...). Just from its appearance, it looks closely related to Crassula remota C. remota , Crassula lanuginosa var. pachystemon 'David' C. lanuginosa var. pachystemon 'David' , and Crassula atropurpurea var. watermeyeri C. atropurpurea var.watermeyeri ; and though it looks a bit different, Crassula nudicaulis C. nudicaulis is in the same group too. The subspecies Crassula pubescens ssp. radicans C. pubescens ssp.radicans , more commonly known as 'Benichigo' in Japanese, has smooth, creeping leaves—in contrast to the basic type, which tends to grow with more upright stems. From what I’ve seen, pubescens forms a carpet, while Benichigo grows more upright—but once it stands up, it eventually flops over and creeps outward, too. The name “pubescens” means “covered with fine soft hairs,” which fits its look, and “radicans” comes from this plant’s way of “creeping while putting out roots.”
