With its stark white and rugged appearance, this plant hardly seems botanical at all. Its strange form evokes images of stone pillars weathered by ages or candles quietly melting away. It's sometimes described as "one of the most unusual oddities among the incredibly diverse Euphorbia." No other Euphorbia really resembles it, though perhaps Pseudolithos migiurtinus P. migiurtinus comes closest within the world of horticulture.
Its natural habitat is Abd al Kuri Island, part of Yemen's Socotra Archipelago. Living on this isolated and severely dry island—where rain is a rare event—this plant grows at an exceptionally slow, deliberate pace. Most specimens in circulation are single-stemmed, but over time they may branch out and form clusters from the base, a process that can easily take over a decade. In the wild, it's said they can reach nearly one meter in height, but imagining the sheer length of time it takes to get there is almost dizzying. In horticulture, it's common to see these plants grafted so they can grow a bit more quickly, compensating for their naturally slow development.
