Picture thick, rugged branches curling and twisting outwards in every direction over a rough, rocky caudex—just like a windswept, barren crag. The entire plant has an eerie, almost legendary aura, perfectly channeling its namesake: the mighty multi-headed serpent of old tales. This species is a classic "octopus-type" among Euphorbias, chunkier and stouter than others in the group, with skin covered in fine, dragon-scale-like bumps and ridges. Its Japanese name, "Kuzuryu (Nine-headed Dragon)," fits its dramatic appearance and stirs the imagination—definitely a name to catch any fantasy lover's eye! The scientific name "inermis" actually means "spineless." Euphorbia esculenta E. esculenta is such a convincing look-alike that even experienced growers overseas say you can't confidently tell them apart unless they're side by side. To distinguish them: in inermis, the base of the dried flower remains as a small bump on the branch, while in esculenta, it doesn't. For Euphorbia flanaganii E. flanaganii , check whether or not it produces offshoots for identification. Its homeland? The dry, gravelly fields of South Africa's Cape Province.
