A Euphorbia that closely resembles a Pachypodium, with large rounded leaves and a sturdy trunk. Of course, it has a strong likeness to Pachypodioides. Judging by its name, you might think it means a "poison plant?!"—but that's a misconception. In reality, its name honors the French naturalist Adrien Eugène Poisson (and, by the way, the spelling is different—'poisson' means "fish" in French!). That said, just like other members of the Euphorbia genus, its sap is a genuine irritant: contact can severely burn your skin, and if it gets in your eyes, it can even cause blindness. So, thinking of it as "poisonous" might not be such a bad idea after all. In Japan, this plant and two relatives—the single-spined "ユニスピナ E. unispina " and the East Africa-native "ベネニフィカ E. venenifica "—are sometimes collectively called the "Three Deadly Poison Euphorbias"... or not, depending on who you ask. Its native range stretches from Guinea to northern Nigeria in West Africa, where it grows on dry rocky hills and savannas at elevations of 400–700 meters. In Japan, you're more likely to encounter the variegated form, ポイゾニー錦 E. poissonii f.variegata , with its striking yellow-marbled leaves, than the original wild species.
