But once it undergoes cresting and albinism (loss of pigment), and spreads out like a fan as in the so-called 'Maharaja' E. lactea f.cristata , or when the entire stem develops white variegation as in 'White Ghost' E. lactea 'White Ghost' , it's as if they're totally different plants altogether.

This species is native to India, and its true form is a small tree with succulent branches bearing thin, round leaves. The cactus-like shape you often see at garden shops is just that "branch" portion. In its natural state, it gives off a classic cactus impression, but once it's crested and becomes albino (loses pigment) and spreads out like a fan, as in 'Maharaja' E. lactea f.cristata , or when the trunk is covered with white variegation as in 'White Ghost' E. lactea 'White Ghost' , it's almost like a different species. Both forms are very popular.
