The large, wavy-edged triangular leaves are draped in a soft fuzz, glowing from silvery white to silver-gray—almost as if a royal family crest and a velvety cloak have fused into one. In English-speaking countries, this lovely texture gives it the nickname "Velvet Leaf," while in Japan, the graceful moniker "Dance of the Fairy" comes from the image of fluttering sleeves. While many succulents are usually small, Kalanchoe beharensis can reach up to three meters tall when given a spacious pot, making it a true showstopper even in large rooms. Its natural home is the dry savannas of southern Madagascar, where sun is intense and rain unpredictable. When growing it, always prioritize plenty of sunlight from the south and excellent drainage. It's sensitive to cold, so avoid letting it drop below 5°C in winter. The fuzzy coating helps shield it from harsh sunlight, so it's tough even in summer, but since it's not used to Japan's muggy summers, absolute safety can't be promised. K. behalensis 'Fang' is a variation of Kalanchoe beharensis and has a very similar look and growth habit.
