Have you ever seen cacti with spines that are bright orange or blue at a garden shop or home improvement center? Those colorful little cacti are actually "Mammillaria Asuka-hime." Its official name is "Arizona Snowcap"—the spines are short, but the wool around the areoles is so thick and brilliantly white, it really looks like it's covered with tiny snowballs. Wait, isn't it supposed to be colorful? The thing is, those colorful ones have actually been artificially dyed, using that pure whiteness as a canvas. Whether colorful or pure white, each version has its own unique charm.

Have you ever spotted cacti with vivid orange or blue spines at a garden store or home center? Those eye-catching plants are actually "Mammillaria Asuka-hime."
The official name is "Arizona Snowcap." It's considered a horticultural variety of gracilis, though there's a rumor it might be a hybrid between gracilis and something else. Gracilis is known for its long spines that completely wrap the plant, turning it into a "silver pincushion." In contrast, Asuka-hime has short spines and dense, fluffy wool covering its areoles, giving it a dazzling, snowy-white look—like little snowballs all over.
As for the colorful cacti, that pure whiteness serves as a canvas for artificial coloring. As the plant grows, it gradually returns to its natural, bright white hue.
!1-One week after purchase. You can just barely see fluffy, white pom-poms emerging from the top (the growing point).
!1-Three weeks after purchase. The blue spines are now only on the sides. The top has completely turned into a white fluffy pom-pom.
!1-And then, after being left alone for two and a half years. It grew a bit—once even got a bit etiolated—but the tip still forms that signature Asuka-hime pom-pom (is it monstrose?). The blue coloring at the base stubbornly remains.
It's a surprisingly fast grower! Depending on the season and environment, that initial colorful phase only lasts about 1–2 weeks—a rare little window.
