Among the Sarcocaulon species, known for their extremely thick, caterpillar- or rubber-hose-like stems that sprawl along the ground, Sarcocaulon multifidum stands out for its lack of spines and its soft, fuzzy leaves covered in fine hairs. The striking contrast between its red stems and blue-gray leaves catches the eye, and the rounded tips of the branches, free from any thorns, give it a gentle and adorable appearance. It closely resembles the superstar Sarcocaulon herrei S. herrei , but that species is well-armed with impressive spines. Native to South Africa and Namibia, its scientific name means "split" or "fragment," referring to the unique shape of its leaves. It produces pink flowers. This is a winter grower, with leaves drying up and going dormant in summer. Even during dormancy, don't keep it completely dry—give just enough water to occasionally moisten the soil.
