With its round, plump shape and spiky leaves, this succulent brings to mind a whole group of hedgehogs huddling together for warmth in a nesting box — wild, but oh-so-cute! It’s a member of the Sempervivum group, known for being frost-hardy and thriving even on the thinnest of soils. Its growth habit is classic Sempervivum: it expands by sending out runners and gradually takes over its space. That said, it actually comes from a distinct group originally called "Jovibarba," and its standout trait is that it sends out much shorter, finer runners that easily detach. It seems to have a strategy: it doesn’t stray far from the main clump, but as it grows, it gently nudges its offspring away. It’s quite similar to the fellow Jovibarba type, @, but this one is said to have a more muted, matte coloration.
