Adromischus marianiae아드로미스크스의 대표적인 품종이지만, 그 모습은 정말로 다양해서 한마디로 정의하기 어렵습니다. 잎이 곤봉처럼 생긴 것도 있고, 가늘고 긴 숟가락 모양이거나, 방석처럼 두툼한 경우도 있습니다. 또 줄기가 있거나 없거나, 표면이 매끈하기도 하고 울퉁불퉁하기도 하죠. 이런 식으로 정말 많은 변형과 유형이 있어서 하나로 규정하기가 힘듭니다. 같은 품종 안에서도 개체 차이가 크다고 알려져 있고요. 심지어 어떤 개체는 '식별에 도움이 될 만한 특징이 전혀 없다'고까지 평가받을 정도라고 해요. “마리아니아에란 무엇인가?”라는 질문을 파고드는 대신, 각각의 다양한 개성을 소중히 감상해 보시길 추천합니다. 참고로 이 학명은 'marianae 마리아나에／마리안나에' 두 가지로 표기되는 경우가 있는데, 모두 같은 식물을 가리킵니다. 1907년부터 100년이 넘도록 이어지는 철자 논쟁이 아직도 결론이 나지 않았기 때문입니다.
