Although it's one of the best-known species of Adromischus, it's surprisingly hard to pin down just what defines it. The leaves can take on an incredible variety of shapes—sometimes club-like, sometimes long and spoon-shaped, sometimes plump like a tiny cushion. Some plants have visible stems, some don't. The leaf surface might be perfectly smooth, or it might be covered in bumps and textures… There are just so many variations that it's almost impossible to describe them all. It's also said that even within the same variety, individuals can look drastically different! In fact, you might even come across plants where "there's nothing at all helpful for ID"—as some collectors put it. So rather than asking yourself, "What exactly is marianiae?", why not enjoy and appreciate the unique charm of each one you find? By the way, you'll sometimes see the scientific name written as "marianae" or "mariannae"—both refer to the same plant. Believe it or not, botanists have been debating the correct spelling for over a hundred years since 1907, and there's still no conclusion!

An Adromischus marianiae herrei leaf cutting doing something weird seeing as it's #SucculentSunday. It is growing roots in 2 places - at the base of the leaf as expected and another point about 1cm up the leaf. I haven't seen this before. #adromischus #succulents #houseplants https://t.co/hLj9BYsxKd
Adromischus marianiae 'Little Spheroid' (Naroegas Se Berg) can be today's #AdventAdromischus. This Little Spheroid clone has very silver leaves. They're usually quite brown. #adromischus #succulents #FoliageFriday #houseplants https://t.co/3xBhSoswP4
Today's #AdventAdromischus was bought as filicaulis but is actually Adromischus marianiae (NE of Clanwilliam, towards Doringbos and Botterkloof Pass). It's not as red as when I got it in summer. I repotted it today because it was bursting out of its pot. #adromischus #succulents https://t.co/Y0JLqTEpan
Today's #AdventAdromischus can be Adromischus marianiae 'Tanqua' EVJ8859 (Matjiesfontein, W of Calvinia). It arrived in the post from the Czech Republic on Friday. This is one of my Christmas presents... #adromischus #succulents #houseplants https://t.co/IqRUwzyYwY
