This popular agave is renowned for its beautiful, broad leaves with a matte, smooth, and pale complexion. With ample sunlight, it tightens up and assumes a compact, ball-shaped form. There are several varieties, but to the untrained eye, they are almost indistinguishable. The Japanese name “Kichijoten” (吉祥天), likely inspired by its red spines and white, beautiful foliage, does not clearly refer to any specific variety today. We might hope that current plants in Japan are direct descendants of the original introductions, yet it’s equally possible that the name is used more broadly to refer to all forms of Agave parryi.
