The Agave genus is known in Japanese as the Ryuzetsuran genus, and the species that truly embodies this namesake is this one. Its defining feature is its variegated leaves. The plain green A. americana is intentionally called the "Blue Ryuzetsuran" in Japan, so you could say this was the very first agave recognized there. Its broad, sharply serrated leaves spread out in a loose, complex curl, perfectly reminiscent of a dragon's tongue. As it matures, it becomes a large plant reaching 1–2 meters, making a bold statement and often serving as a centerpiece at botanical gardens across Japan. When young, it resembles A. angustifolia 'Marginata' quite a bit and may sometimes be traded without much distinction. There’s also a striking variety with white-centered variegation, known as "Kegon A. americana var.mediopicta f.alba ," which is also available in the market.
