You've probably heard the name "sisal" as a material for ropes and carpets. Sometimes it's called "sisal hemp," but in fact, that's made from the leaves of Agave sisalana. As you might guess, agaves have long, tough fibers running through their leaves, and this species—with its thinner leaves—may have been easier to use for fiber extraction. Sisal plants are sterile and don't produce seeds. It's believed that they are a hybrid of Agave angustifolia A. angustifolia and Agave kewensis A. kewensis .
