A compact Aloe species, this plant forms low, dense clusters of short, bluish triangular leaves armed all over with soft, white spines. Because of these small white spines, it's called "Hedgehog Aloe" in English, but don't worry—touching it doesn't hurt at all, and it feels almost like a plastic toy. Another highlight is the strikingly large scarlet to orange flowers it puts up from winter to spring, which seem oversized compared to its small body.
Humans have had a long history with this species; it was described by Linnaeus, the founder of taxonomy, in 1753 (strictly speaking, it was first published as the variety perfoliata var. humilis). The species name "humilis" comes from Latin, meaning "low-growing," which fits its appearance perfectly. Its native home is the rocky, arid soils of the Karoo in South Africa's Cape region.
When it comes to the same "hedgehog look," A. erinacea from Namibia features jet-black spines arranged in a neat line along the upper midrib of the leaf, whereas humilis has white spines placed randomly (as pointed out explicitly by World Flora Online). Other lookalikes—though only sharing a similar vibe—include tiny Malagasy A. descoingsii , blue-gray A. parvula , and the spotted-leaved A. pratensis from South African grasslands, but each of these comes from a different region and evolutionary background. Among these "hedgehog aloes," humilis is by far the easiest to obtain, so why not start your collection with this beginner-friendly and charming species?
