DETAIL

A small Aloe species native to South Africa, typically growing to about 25–30 cm. Its densely packed, glossy leaves are adorned with distinctive white dots—its signature charm—and it’s sometimes nicknamed the "Tiger Aloe." While its name, variegata, suggests it's variegated, it actually refers to a mottled pattern. There's also a beloved cultivar called A. 'Chiyohime' .

FEATURES/ORIGINFeatures/Origin

Its compact, glossy green leaves spotted with white are the main attraction, and when the dots align horizontally, the pattern can resemble tiger stripes—hence the name Tiger Aloe. The leaf edges are generally smooth (just a slight serration at the tips), and at the edges and keel tops, there are subtle 'windows' that allow light to pass through, giving the leaves a delicate translucence. The leaves are a bright green, but with dry conditions and sunlight, they can blush a faint red. Native to South Africa and Namibia, this plant grows in the shade of trees or crevices between rocks and is considered fairly shade-tolerant, though it may become slightly leggy indoors.

Early February - Planted together with Elephiae G. ellaphieae

In the colder months, sunlight can turn its leaves a reddish-brown (though in the photos it may look almost black, the color is actually a lighter brown). The shaded parts remain green, so this coloration is likely just a natural form of sun protection.

Mid-February - Shaded back side

POINTCare Points

Sunlight... Tolerates Indoor Light

This plant doesn't require full sun—bright, indirect light indoors or in semi-shade is just fine. Just be aware that if it gets too little sun, it may stretch and its color can fade.

Cold Tolerance... Quite Strong if Kept Dry

It has been reported to withstand temperatures as low as -7°C (19°F) for short periods—provided the roots are dry. The risk of rot actually increases in winter if it's kept too wet, so be careful not to overwater.
