A classic high-end cactus variety, renowned for the stunning contrast between its sharply pointed black spines and a white body covered in a thick waxy layer. Native to the Atacama Desert of Chile—where rain falls perhaps once a year or not at all—this cactus is known for its extremely slow growth even in cultivation. Especially prized are wild-grown specimens whose dense wax coating gives them a truly snow-white appearance, a feature notoriously difficult to replicate in horticultural settings. This difficulty has only fueled the desire and admiration for wild-collected plants, which reached a breaking point in 2020 when a massive smuggling operation was uncovered in Italy, sending shockwaves through the plant community. In Japan, strict regulations following the enforcement of the Washington Convention in 1980 have made import and export extremely difficult; in recent years, any "wild cactus" seen casually for sale is almost certainly from illegal trade (though, in rare cases, artificially propagated plants may be permitted with proper documentation—always check the paperwork!). Seed-grown and offset plants, however, are perfectly legal, so you can purchase them with peace of mind. They may be expensive, though!
