A hefty, perfectly round caudex with pipe-like slender branches—*the* image most people have in mind when they hear “caudex”! Not only is this form iconic for the genus Pachypodium, but also it’s a true representative of caudiciform plants as a whole. Young branches are protected by spines, but the swollen caudex is smooth and hairless (in seed-grown plants, the spines often persist because they receive such careful treatment). Perhaps owing to its beautiful pale and flawless skin, it’s also been dubbed the Japanese name “Zougekyuu,” which means ‘Ivory Palace.’ The unique contrast between the plump caudex and those thin pipe branches is surprisingly rare among other Pachypodium species, making *gracilius* the darling of collectors. The basic species, P. rosulatum , has a more robust and compact build. Some distinguishing features are its fine, slender leaves, sparse and thin branching, and densely packed brownish spines. The name "gracilius" actually means “slender leaf.” These plants call Madagascar’s Isalo Mountains home.
