Even among the many hybrids of Dyckia, this representative species is probably the one that first comes to mind when people think "Dyckia." If you see "ML" written, it refers to this plant. Nicknamed the "White Dyckia," its broad leaves are covered with a thick layer of white wax that gives them a stunning metallic silver shine. As it grows, it reaches about 25–30 cm in size. Its whiteness is an unmistakable feature, but there are individual differences in leaf width and color. The scientific name comes from Julien Marnier-Lapostolle, the discoverer of this species and once owner of the Jardin Botanic in Brazil. (Incidentally, his father created the famous orange liqueur Grand Marnier.) This “discovery” happened fairly recently, in 1960.

The biggest feature that earned it the nickname "White Dyckia" is the thick, prominent trichomes (trichome: hair-like outgrowths, sometimes called "tricholome" but they are the same thing) that cover the leaves. These trichomes, also called "scales," become cracked and scale-like as the plant grows, sitting just on the leaf surface, making them easy to brush off. Even a gentle touch can remove them, and once they're gone, they won't grow back in that spot.
So, pouring water over the top is a no-go. While the plant itself is robust enough to survive outdoors in the rain, to keep its beautiful trichomes intact, it's best to grow it under shelter.
The leaves are narrower, but the scales are even thicker and more prominent, creating a standout white appearance that is very popular. Due to individual differences within Estevesii, several cultivars are available in the horticultural trade.
