PUKUBOOK Succulent picture book

CRASSULACEAE Crassula pellucida

Also Known As JA ペルシダ JA ペルシダ・マルギナリス

This adorable groundcover-type Crassula looks a lot like a Sedum and hails from South Africa. One of the top “idol” varieties in the Sedum world is C. pellucida ssp.marginalis 'Little Missy' , along with its close relatives. There are several different types! In Japan, what’s often called “Persida (Persida Nishiki)” is probably C. pellucida ssp.marginalis 'Calico Kitten' . “Persida” comes from Latin and means something like “shining” or “transparent.” There’s also a species called E. 'Pellucida' in the Echeveria genus, but it’s a completely different plant.

VARIATIONVariation

C. pellucida ssp.pellucida

The standard form of Persida has classic pale green leaves. The leaves alternate along the stem as it grows. It’s native to the southern Cape region.

C. pellucida ssp.brachypetala

The brachypetala subspecies. This type features red-edged, narrower and more pointed leaves. It has a wide range across the eastern side of South Africa.

C. pellucida ssp.marginalis

The marginalis subspecies also has red-edged leaves, but the leaves cluster so tightly together that sometimes it looks like one round leaf radiating out from the stem—much like C. perforata . It lives in the southeastern Cape region.

C. pellucida ssp.marginalis 'Calico Kitten'

This is a white-edged variation of marginalis that is even more reddish in color. It’s sometimes labeled as marginalis rubra f.variegata. Because the “clustered leaves” look is less pronounced, it’s not 100% clear if it’s a direct descendant of marginalis. In Japan, “Persida” and “Persida Nishiki” often refer to this Calico Kitten variant.

C. pellucida ssp.marginalis 'Little Missy'

This is a miniature, dwarf white-edged form of marginalis. You may also see it listed as minima or Dwarf Form, though there’s no strict naming rule. Compared to Persida, its petite size is obvious!

C. pellucida ssp.marginalis 'Little Floggy'

This variety looks just like Little Missy, but sports yellow-centered variegation. Sometimes it’s described as the “non-variegated” type, too.
