This clumping cactus is densely covered with slightly long, straight spines and tends to appear yellow or brown. It's a well-known species broadly distributed across the western regions of North America, from California down into Mexico. At full size, the fuzzy columns can grow up to about 30 cm tall and 10 cm thick, forming bumpy clusters from the base. In the right conditions, these clusters can expand into a large family up to a meter in diameter. Spring brings pink or lavender-colored flowers, followed by fruit in the summer. The sweet, strawberry-like fruit is the reason this plant is sometimes called the "Strawberry Cactus". During the active growing and flowering period from spring to summer, water once a week or more as needed, but be mindful that it doesn’t tolerate excess moisture—make sure to use well-draining soil, ensure good airflow, and only water after the soil has dried out.
