Nicknamed the "Penny Plant," this charming, fresh-looking succulent has thick, perfectly round leaves that are a bit bigger than real coins. It comes from the gently sunlit, relatively dry forests of Toliara Province in southwestern Madagascar. In the wild, it's a climbing plant that winds its way up trees, but grown on its own, its branches will stretch out to about 30–50 cm—pretty impressive—and then gradually spill over and grow outward. It's quite vigorous, growing steadily except during the heart of winter. For watering, let the soil surface dry out, and water at the base rather than on the leaves. It can get through winter, but it's safest to keep it indoors when it's cold. It loves lots of sunlight, but will also do just fine in partial shade as long as it gets about four hours of sun a day. The key to keeping it looking its best is to watch out for signs of stretching—this helps you strike the right balance with the light.
