A clustering bush with spiny branches, each tipped with little tufts of leaves. At first glance, it looks just like a mesemb or a caudiciform euphorbia, but it's actually a member of the cactus family! Its natural home is the mountainous Patagonia region of southern South America—specifically Chile and Argentina. Each stem only gets about 20 cm tall, but in its native habitat, the bush can expand to a massive 2 meters across, forming a green mass that seems to cover the rocks (calling it a carpet would fit, except lying down on it would definitely hurt…). While it easily survives cold down to -10°C, it's sensitive to summer heat, so be cautious there. Think of it as an alpine plant, and care for it accordingly. At the end of spring, it produces white flowers with yellow stamens. And here's a fun fact: those little "leaves" really are true leaves, making M. poeppigii the only cactus, aside from the Pereskiopsis group, that still keeps its leaves.
