With its thick, stubby trunk topped with cute, rounded branches that look like little balls, this Euphorbia is almost like a lovable mascot character! Even its spiky thorns somehow manage to be endearing. At first, you'll be smitten by its chubby ball-like appearance…but that cuteness is short-lived. Eventually, those round branches stretch out and transform, giving it a bold, wild look like a cluster of tall, upright desert cacti. The adorable ball shape is just its starter form, but if you prune the elongated stems back, they might just bounce back and restore that charming roundness.
Native exclusively to the Jandía Peninsula in the Canary Islands (which is also home to Aeoniums), this plant is such a local icon that it's been declared the "plant symbol" of the island by law. People often say it looks like a distant relative of the Canary Islands’ symbolic E. canariensis when seen from afar, but its closest lookalike is actually Morocco’s E. officinarum .
