With its mysterious look, as if it’s been painted white with real paint, this living plant seems almost unreal—making it a perfect match for shabby chic interiors like French country or West Coast styles. This is a form of Euphorbia lactea whose usual green stem has lost its pigmentation, turning pure white. Native to India, it's highly drought-tolerant, but sensitive to excessive moisture and cold. Place it in a sunny spot and water sparingly. In winter, be sure to bring it indoors.

True to its name "White Ghost," this plant showcases an almost sculptural beauty, so remarkable it hardly looks alive. Its painted-white appearance harmonizes beautifully with shabby-chic interiors, like French country and West Coast styles—one reason it’s so popular. We recommend letting it star as the centerpiece in your room, paired with a rugged, characterful pot.
Originally, this rare white form is what happens when the green, succulent Euphorbia lactea loses the chlorophyll in its stem (this is known as albinism). The leaves have also shrunk away, leaving only tiny, millimeter-sized remnants.
Because it lacks chlorophyll, it can’t produce much energy for growth. As a result, it grows slowly—and, combined with its popularity, tends to be quite pricey. A single branch goes for ¥1,000–2,000; roughly 30cm can fetch ¥4,000–6,000; and a 60cm specimen costs about ¥8,000–10,000. Especially large, beautiful specimens can sell for well over ¥50,000.
Even though it looks white like a variegated plant, it actually loves sunlight and should be exposed to plenty of it. Some say it can handle full sun, but from my own experience and advice from plant shops, bright but gentle light is best—partial shade is safest. It will grow indoors, but be sure to place it by a sunny window. If it doesn’t get enough sun, it becomes more prone to damage.
Since it’s native to India, it’s very heat-tolerant and grows actively in the summer. On the flip side, it’s not cold-hardy at all and won’t survive winters outdoors in Japan. Its minimum temperature is about 10°C, so once it starts to get cold, bring it inside.
Like other succulents, it’s adapted to dry conditions but dislikes moisture buildup. Use well-draining soil, and when the soil dries out, water thoroughly. From spring through autumn, aim to water about 2–3 times per month. Although its growth slows down in winter, it doesn’t go fully dormant; don’t cut off water entirely, but reduce watering to about once a month, making sure to water deeply.
To propagate, cut the stem (a 5cm section is enough, and you can cut from anywhere—not just the tip). Wipe off the white sap, let the cutting dry thoroughly, then plant it shallowly in Kanuma soil or propagation mix. It can take several months for roots to form, so avoid propagating in autumn (when it may get cold before rooting); early spring, just before the growing season, is best.
