Imagine a mysterious planet, home to alien life, confirmed 100,000 light-years away from Earth—could it really exist? The Monanthes polyphylla is a succulent that sparks this kind of otherworldly imagination. Its round buds stretch upwards and are covered in soft, fuzzy hairs, giving them a floating, dreamy appearance. While its actual habitat isn't quite as far as an undiscovered planet, it does call the Canary Islands of northeast Africa home—a region full of unique plant relatives. Monanthes polyphylla is distantly related to Aeonium and Sempervivum as well.

Some sources, like Llifle, recommend 'shaded is best.' Throughout the year, gentle, dappled sunlight in partial shade leads to healthy, nicely-shaped growth and helps Monanthes polyphylla keep its best appearance. However, to encourage flowering, the plant will need plenty of light at the end of winter. In summer, avoid direct sun, which can scorch its leaves, and during its winter dormancy, there’s no need for strong light—simply move it to a bright spot indoors.
Monanthes polyphylla rests during winter, so try to keep it mostly dry. Instead of completely withholding water, it’s better to moisten the soil about once a month.
In the growing season, once between spring and summer, give it a potassium-rich liquid fertilizer diluted to one-quarter strength.
The most common ways to multiply this plant are by division or cuttings. You can also grow it from seed; germination takes about 14 to 21 days at 21°C.
A big old bowl of Monanthes polyphylla. These succulent Crassulaceae are endemic to the Canary Islands where they are found on rocks, often shaded in damp crevices. Hence, they seem to appreciate a lot more water and filtered light than other common succulents we grow. https://t.co/9OhGmKqjhD
