DETAIL

At first glance, it might look just like any ordinary flower—but don't be fooled! This plant is surprisingly tough when it comes to strong sunlight and dry conditions, and its ability to root and multiply from cuttings is pure succulent power. There are lots of ornamental varieties with different leaf shapes and colors, so you might end up collecting just this one species! It hails from the southernmost part of Russia (near Turkey), in the Caucasus region.

FEATURES/ORIGINFeatures/Origin

This is a ground cover type of sedum that spreads out its tiny, adorable leaves. With so many ornamental varieties differing in color and leaf shape, you might find yourself collecting this species alone! Beyond its cute looks, it's remarkably hardy against sun and drought, and its strong life force lets it multiply rapidly from cuttings.

It rarely grows taller than about 10 cm, and its creeping growth habit means it extends sideways. This makes it perfect not just for ground cover, but also for adding nuance to mixed plantings.

As the name suggests, Sedum spurium comes from the southernmost part of Russia (close to Turkey) in the Caucasus region. If you just say "Kirinsou" in Japanese, it usually refers to P. aizoon , a completely different species.

It looks like H. sieboldii var.sieboldii but, while that plant's rosettes are about 2–3 cm in size, Sedum spurium's rosettes are smaller, at around 1 cm.

POINTCare Points

It multiplies easily

The best seasons for growth are the cool to chilly periods of spring and autumn. That’s your chance for propagation—simply snip any branches that have grown too long, and stick them directly into the soil. They'll rapidly send out new roots and shoots from the cut stems, so you'll see them multiplying in no time.

VARIATIONVariation

There are many ornamental varieties, with 'Dragon's Blood' and 'Tricolor' leading the way (although, in Japan, other varieties can be quite rare to find).
