PUKUBOOK Succulent picture book

2023.9.1 Celebrating Surviving Summer: New Faces Return for Sharing Sale!

With the sweltering "hottest summer ever recorded" finally hinting at a break, how have you been holding up? Even PUKUBOOK may have seemed a bit distant from succulent activities due to the relentless heat, but that's not the whole story—in fact, we've been going all-out to survive summer alongside exciting new varieties sourced from overseas at the season's start. Now that some of these plants have triumphantly made it, I'm preparing to offer them as part of a "sharing sale." So in this post, I’ll be introducing a few of these proud survivors. Yes, it’s another personal little trophy post—thanks for playing along with me!

Echeverias & More

I’ve really handpicked only the Echeveria varieties I personally find cute to share with you! Of course, I’d like to make mainstays like cante and laui our core lineup as well. (That's my official excuse for the small numbers on offer.)

Echeveria 'Kingyo Hime' A lovely hybrid with deep wine-red coloring and sharply pointed leaves that spread out in every direction, creating a "bursting" form. The adorable name, inspired by the fluttering tail of a goldfish, makes it even more charming.
Echeveria 'Lemon Jewel' A delightful plant with shiny, bright lime-green leaves layered into cute clusters—it should make a great accent in mixed arrangements.
Echeveria 'Pink Spot' Though at first glance it looks like a simple echeveria similar to albicans or "Hoshijin," what makes this one special is the obvious edged variegation along the leaf rims, giving it the feel of a finely crafted art piece.
Echeveria 'Citrus'
Echeveria corolata Tapalpa
Echeveria 'Lotus Lamp'
Sedeveria 'Blue Apple'

Haworthias & Agaves

I’m planning to release a few "Filigree" specimens that participated in our LED feature. While I can't promise they'll be super cheap, I'd appreciate it if you'd browse as a way of supporting those who help with our articles!

Agave oteroi 'Filigree'

The highlight Haworthia this time is this "Suisho." It's a fantastic variety, but there actually aren’t many available under the straightforward name "Suisho Obutsusa" in the market. I’ll be sharing healthy plants that stayed plump and vibrant all summer by soaking up plenty of water.

Haworthia 'Suisho' With sharp, triangular, clear windows that gleam like crystals, this distinguished variety earned the Japan Haworthia Society's 2015 Gold Prize.

These always sell out quickly, so I've prepared a little more than usual. Some are still unrooted and not in peak condition just yet, but I’m confident they’ll flourish once autumn rolls in.

Aloe erinacea Not rooted yet, but looking healthy. It’s noticeably larger and more robust than the lot I offered last time.
Haworthia 'Dodson Purple Obutsusa' Survived summer as a cutting, so it has a wrinkly look.

Lithops

There are also several new Lithops types—plump, perky, and thriving!

Lithops gracilidelineata C262
Lithops coleorum C396
Lithops pseudotruncatella ssp.groendrayensis C246
Lithops terricolor C133
Lithops werneri C188
Lithops salicola 'Bacchus'

Other Highlights

I’ve prepared plenty of rare Aeonium saundersii too. They’re cuttings, but I’m positive they’ll root and grow strong after September.

The Secret Behind Our Hardy End-of-Summer Seedlings

My big change this summer a "growing environment" overhaul

Usually, succulents bounced back from summer only in late September or October. So why are these guys so healthy now, even before summer’s really over? Because we made a major change to our care environment. The hint: we recently started "growing indoors under LED lights." I’m still hitting bumps in the road—about half of my experiments haven’t worked out—but as things become more stable, I’m hoping to share some practical tips!

Succulent Sharing Shop—Now Restarting!

Haruka Nishizawa unofficially appointed as PUKUBOOK SUCCULENTS official ambassador

So! Our official succulent shop, PUKUBOOK SUCCULENTS, was practically on summer break, but this fall, we’re planning a mini renewal and a fresh start. The star of that relaunch is our new (somewhat forcibly appointed) official ambassador, Haruka Nishizawa, who’ll be helping guide those who use our shop!

#She actually made a quiet debut in our column last week. You might be seeing her again in upcoming PUKUBOOK features!

We’re still finishing preparations, but hopefully we can launch as soon as next week. Looking forward to your support!
