DETAIL

Round, pom-pom-like rosettes that are just too cute! With its unique appearance, this mysterious succulent known as "Adonis" has sparked rumors, but it turns out its true identity is a species called Aeonium saundersii. Its small rosettes grow just 3–6cm across, sitting atop thin stems only a few millimeters wide. Delicate as it may be, it can actually grow to about 30cm if you give it some love.

Cute pom-pom rosettes—the awakening, usually late September to October
Early March after a season of winter growth, it opens up wide at its happiest
Stretchy winter look after a bit of fall legginess

These little round rosettes at the tips of thin stems are absolutely adorable! This succulent, often called a "mystery" for its one-of-a-kind shape and known as "Adonis," is actually a winter-grower called Aeonium saundersii.

The tips of these slender stems unfurl soft, fuzzy, round leaves into petite rosettes about 3–6cm across. Right before their summer sleep, they drop excess leaves and become even rounder—no wonder they're so popular!

In April, it blooms with bright yellow flowers. I heard the plant dies after flowering, so I cut it just in case!

In spring, they produce glossy yellow flowers. It's said that Aeoniums die after flowering—even though that's not always certain—, so the plant here was cut ahead of time just in case. For comparison, I also cut a shoot that hadn’t flowered. Afterward, only the one that bloomed completely withered away (so maybe it's just the branch that flowers, not the whole plant, that dies).

For the record: the one that didn't bloom—just a single tiny ball—was left unattended and unwatered. But when autumn arrived, it popped back to life! (Talk about tough!

Originating from the paradise of Aeoniums—the Canary Islands! Actually, it’s so rare that it’s listed as endangered on the Red List. Let’s take really good care of these special plants.

POINTCare Points

Like other Aeoniums, this one is a winter grower. It withstands drought in summer and can tolerate temperatures down to around -5°C in winter. Although its stems are slender and delicate, given the right conditions, it can reach about 30cm. It loves sunlight and thrives even in strong direct light.

However, during its summer dormancy, after turning into a little ball, it should be kept somewhere cool and breezy, out of direct sun. You can completely stop watering at this stage—no problem.

Growth Diary

Curious to try, I picked up a little twig despite the lack of references or guides—wondering, "Will it really grow like this?" Here’s my record of trial and error from that starting point.

How it looked when it arrived in September

September. When it first came to me, I had no idea where roots would emerge, so I separated it into a main branch, side branch, and just a leaf, and stuck each in soil without watering them. I left the pots at the side of my kitchen (bright for humans, but shady by plant standards) and just waited.

Roots appeared by November
Root close-up

In November, on a whim I checked and found tiny roots had appeared! Roots seemed to pop right out of the middle of the stem. In the end, the largest piece turned out strongest. By the way, the roots I found unfortunately died from the shock of being pulled up. Lesson learned: plants don’t like to be disturbed.

December—"Blooming" (well, not a flower, but leaf opening!)

December. Suddenly, the rosettes opened! That’s Aeonium for you—definitely a winter lover. Some say it only opens for a few months each year. Was it rooting or just the right season? Hard to tell, but I celebrated by repotting and watering, hoping it would grow bigger. I moved it to a bright spot out of direct sunlight.
The smallest piece didn’t budge—just shriveled up. Will watering help or hurt?

January 8 opening more each day.
January 12 fully open?

By the way, the piece that was just a leaf (and hadn’t rooted at all), finally opened a bit about half a year later. But it never managed to grow very well… So, in conclusion: when propagating by cuttings, it’s best to use the largest branches you can, and plant at least half the stem in the soil.
