DETAIL

Just as it looks, this is one of the so-called "tako-mono" Euphorbias ((personally, I wish the English nickname "Medusa" would catch on elsewhere!)). When we say "tako-mono," what usually comes to mind first is E. gorgonis , which sends out two or three rows of "octopus legs"—that is, branches—from around the edge of its caudex, giving it a bushier, more crowded appearance from a distance. By contrast, this plant produces only a single row, so it has fewer legs, and its appearance is the very definition of an "octopus." Also, compared to others, its caudex tends to grow upright and elongated. It's a rare species known only to grow wild in a very limited area of Little Karoo, South Africa. If you're new to tako-mono, you'll want to start with E. gorgonis ; if you prefer something even hardier as an introduction, go for E. flanaganii ; but if you're really after that quintessential "octopus" look, then this "colliculina" is the one you'll want to try.
